Bug! Giant bug!!!! It was huge, huge! And this shiny iridescent metallic color! Like maybe it was mutant or radioactive or something! And it was aliiiiiiiiive!

Whoah. I didn't sign up for this. I don't know how I'm going to handle it here.

You're there? Congrats -- it's can't be all bugs and murants! (Actually, a metallic bug sounds kinda pretty).

Exciting! Have you explored yet (beyond whatever corner the bug was in, that is)?

No kitties were interested in chasing the bug and playing with it until it lost a few legs and then eating it? Or is it only Mr. Stripey who thinks that's what should happen with bugs?

I'm glad you made it there safe and sound. And you'll get used to the change of scenery. Think of it as an adventure!

Ew A similar thing happened to me about a month after moving to MA-town. I was ready to move back home. The bugs never got any less scary, but other good stuff about the town eventually won out. (But I fully admit I'm happy that those particular bugs are less common in PhDville)

Ha! I live in a perfectly normal, non-wilderness of a city, and on my very first day of living alone in my very own apartment in this city, I had just such an encounter with a giant, giant bug. As it turned out, the fucker was a good omen. (And, importantly, I haven't seen anything like it, since.)

So perhaps this is a blessing upon you, O Cog. You have my best, in any case, for your new adventure.

Scary!! I hope you were able to kill it immediately. I hate bugs!

That said, I, too, am glad that you've made it to your destination. I know that it's got to be scary being there -- giant bug or no giant bug. But this is going to be an awesome adventure once you start working. Until then, explore the town and have a great time. We're all wishing you well!

Sorry to hear about the critter. The same thing happened to me my first night in the city where I still live. But critters are not omens. Slay it as you will the challenges to come.

And please accept my housewarming gift of virtual salt (to season your life), bread (so you will not go hungry), and a broom (to sweep your troubles—and vermin—away).

What Lucky Jane said about the virtual housewarming gifts!

Bugs are friends, not food. Or something like that :) Was it at least outside?

My first week living in Utah, I saw a moose in the canyon behind my house. Which is way cooler than giant iridescent bugs, but also vastly more likely to trample me to death. And it caused a similar feeling of "whoah... I'm not in Johannesburg anymore..."

Good luck. The culture shock will wear off eventually, I promise.

I think I know what it was - email me and I'll give you the low-down on these things. They can be gotten rid of - I'm glad you're there safely (if not particularly soundly)!!

It was in the car people, when we went back outside to find someplace for dinner. In! The! Car! Ewwww!

On the plus side, it was not a moose --- that would really put a dent in my vehicle!
